Minerals

May 9, 2016

Mineral supplementation can play a very important role in the overall health of your herd.  It is often one of the most overlooked tools in a producers arsenal to improve productivity.  Nutrition has a definite effect on the brood cow and this cannot be minimized.  Free choice loose minerals are considered to be the most common program in grazing beef herds.  Unfortunately you still see a lot of blocks being fed.  These are typically the hard, red 50 lb. blocks that cows simply cannot lick enough of to meet their mineral needs.  Also, the white or yellow salt blocks are just not adequate.  Please make sure that you are taking a good look at your mineral program and if you need to make changes this is one of the easiest ways you can increase the productivity relatively easily of your breeding herd.  We here at Blue Ribbon Cattle use a loose mineral from FRM and it changes between the summer months and winter months as our forage changes.  It is always fed free choice.  We are always reading and studying about the effects nutrition can have on our cattle.  We hope to raise and produce a herd that will lead long and productive lives.
